Sloth
Ink on Bristol board 25.5 cm x 30.5 cm December 2020 Exhibition Text My piece "sloth" was inspired by my depression. In other words, a depiction of how my lack of confidence, motivation and general happiness makes me feel. If I had to describe how my body feels all the time, I would say I feel like a heavy skeleton, thats sick to her stomach, and tiered out of her mind with a headache, her back hurts and she has no appetite. But at least she has great eyelashes. |
Planning
Inspiration
I was inspired my the seven capitol sins in Catholicism, and in particular sloth. The sin of neglection of one's own duties that causes their life to change for the worse. "Sluggish actions draw one away from good deeds entirely" I personally related the sloth sin because of my inspiration to relate to my mental illness. I used ink blotching on the background to make the piece seem old, dirty, and moldy almost. I feel as though this worked really well, especially combined with my facial expression.
Stylistically I chose this style, called "beautiful trash art" online, shared as a fun doodle idea. I chose this style to incorporate into my inking because I literally wanted it to look bad or trashy in order to express the trashy feeling in the pit of my stomach. These examples look more artistic rather than my almost disturbing and slightly more realistic way of inking this self portrait. |

Planning Sketches
I didn't want to do actual planning sketches since the whole purpose of this doodle style is to come up with it as you go. The three examples to the right I just did for fun a while ago, but was inspired to make an actual piece with this kind of style since I really enjoy it. So I only took a reference picture of myself and used that to ink something like my practices shown.
With my reference photo I only used it with the basic shapes of my face. I exaggerated my face shape, nose, and eye size. I wanted this piece to remind of tim burton's style a little bit. I elongated my face and made my nose a slightly different shape to make it looked pushed down and more triangular. I also made my eyes bigger to express my eye-bags more prominently. |

Experimentation
I experimented throughout my process. First I tried splotching india ink like watercolor, which I wasn't totally confident would work. Full send you know? Outlining without an undersketch is also pretty new to me, I did this for the first time with my "sisters of Fate" piece. It can be pretty nerve-racking, it especially was with this piece since the ink splotching took about three hours to fully dry and I only did one page. This was also the first time I watered down india ink to use as light shading and layering. Using ink this way was actually really fun, I felt like I could mess up and it wouldn't be much of a problem or an easy fix, even though I wouldn't be able to erase it.

Critique
I really like this piece a lot. Not only was it super fun to make but it also turned out super well, and is a great addition to my portfolio. I only wish I would have added some more abstract details like the swirls for blush. I also accidentally didn't include the bleached part of my hair, it's not a big problem but would have been nice to include. I also don't like the eyebrows, as I shouldn't have done them totally black, and should have done a slightly watered down mix of ink to make them match my hair and my real eyebrows.

Reflection
This piece was really fun to make, and it helped me understand myself a little better actually. I just let myself loos to ink whatever I felt I looked like. Im glad my subconscious made something so beautiful. I don't have anything genitive to say about this and feel like it is one of my best pieces expressively.
