Creation of Adam Created DeathDigital Manipulation
2300px x 1263px February 2020 Exhibition Text
My piece "Creation of Adam Created Death" represents how as humans became more and more advanced, the planet became less and less alive. We as a species have inhabited every corner of the earth, spreading our plague of plastic and pollution. Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of Plant, Insect, Bird or Mammal become extinct every 24 hours, which is about 1000 times the natural rate.

Inspiration
My piece was originally inspired by the painting “Creation of Adam” by Michelangelo. Being that this assignment was going to be my Digital Manipulation/Photography piece of the semester, I needed to take my own photos. The idea of the creation of man really spoke to me, but since the creation of man and industry there has been a drastic decline of nature. As stated in my exhibition text 150 to 200 species of Mammals, Insects, Plants, and Birds have died out in the last 24 hours, which is 1000 times more than it is naturally, all due to us. I love nature a lot, I have a very deep understanding and love of nature, I feel like I'm very in tune with it. So it anguishes me that so many living things are dying out, most of them we haven't even “discovered” yet. This is why I wanted to make a piece about life and in particular humans. The invasive species that I am a part of has ruined the planet to the point where we can't fix it anymore, nothing can heal it anymore, there will always be our garbage footprint in the Earth, and I hope if, or when we do inhabit another planet that we don't make the same mistakes as we have in the past.
Anyways, I wondered “What if the creation of Adam according to the Bible was true? What would it look like?”. I assumed a lot of electricity, or transfer of energy from one to another, so I used that. I also looked to the original painting for more inspiration and I really liked the hands almost touching. |

Experimentation
While I was drawing the electricity on my iPad I was playing around with what it would look like. I tried it smooth, almost like water or wind that's animated. Then jagged with smooth edges that kind of looked like little mountains. Finally just normally jagged, and this is what I used in the final product. Using the most jagged method was actually the easiest because procreate has this feature when you make a line that it will smooth it out into whatever shape it thinks you're trying to make. You can make perfect geometric shapes or jagged lines like I was trying to make. This feature became very useful and cut down my time working on this project significantly, which was really nice. Without it I would have drawn each line individually, or gone with the jagged lines that were a little bit smoother, because I can make those by hand.

Critique
I feel as though I could have I could have done better concerning the timing of the gif, there might be too much time dedicated to the "electricity" portion and too little time on the decay part. But at the same time this timing has a purposeful sense of urgency near the end to mirror a scene in a horror movie. I also spotted a few frames where I didn't cut out my hand perfectly, to were you can see the white background in the original picture. I also could have tried something with the background instead of keeping it one solid color.
Reflection
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
The only real effect the inspiration had on my artwork was The base idea, but I went against the base idea of the painting putting it in a negative point of view versus a positive.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
My approach is somewhat anti-biblical and anti Human Race.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The main generalization i've come up with through my research is that people put way too much faith in, dare I say, stories.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around most of my research was the fact that it just hit me that the planet is dying because of us. To say something about it.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
Again, that people put too much faith in other people's wacky ideas.
